PSHE
At Hartpury C of E Primary School, we aim to develop children who are motivated and equipped to be courageous advocates for our world, throughout their lives. We seek to develop each child’s understanding, respect, appreciation and responsibility for the world around us, so they can make a difference both now and in the future. The Global Sustainable Development Goals are central to our ethos and our Christian Values underpin all aspects of our community as we strive for the children to develop a broad understanding and enjoyment of the world that enables them to be outward looking, resilient and effective citizens of the future.
The PSHE curriculum is delivered through the myHappymind programme and supplemented with units from Scarf, GHLL and Facts for life.
This curriculum will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:
- Have a sense of purpose
- Value self and others
- Form relationships
- Make and act on informed decisions
- Communicate effectively and work with others
- Respond to challenge
- Be an active partner in their own learning
- Be active citizens within the local community
- Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
- Become healthy and fulfilled individuals
Part of the myHappymind approach is the practice of mindfulness exercises with the children. These sessions enable children to relax the body as well as calm/quieten the mind. This improves their capacity to learn and develops inner resilience.
myHappymind+ covers all areas of PSHE (apart from RSHE) for the primary phase, through 3 core themes:
Core Theme 1: Health and Well-being
Core Theme 2: Relationships
Core Theme 3: Living in the wider world.
At Hartpury, we believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught weekly; although there will also be opportunity to make cross-curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of the PSHE scheme of work. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class. RHSE is covered through the use of GHLL and Scarf Resources.
